TP Assessments pre-cosmetic assessments include questionnaires, a 90 minute consultation, a feedback session and a report which is shared with the referring medical practitioner. TP Assessment only conduct pre-cosmetic assessments with adults (18+ years). We can conduct pre-cosmetic procedure assessments both in person and via telehealth (TEAMs video).
As of July 2023, psychological screening is mandatory for individuals seeking cosmetic procedures. The Medical Board of Australia (MBA) and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) issued new guidelines for the practice and advertising of cosmetic procedures in Australia. The aim of these new guidelines is to prevent adverse outcomes following cosmetic procedures.
These new guidelines state the medical practitioner performing the cosmetic surgery/procedure must perform psychological screening to assess the patient’s suitability. If the results of this screening indicate the patient is at increased risk of experiencing adverse outcomes, the patient will then be referred to a psychologist, GP, or psychiatrist for further evaluation.
TP Assessments are following all the ethical and clinical guidelines outlined within the APS Practice Guidelines.
The guidelines are applicable to anyone wanting to undergo cosmetic surgeries as well as non-surgical cosmetic procedures. These guidelines are only in place for surgeries and procedures with purely cosmetic/aesthetic reasoning. They do not apply to reconstructive surgery, gender affirmation surgery, or procedures which have medical justifications.
Cosmetic surgery involves cutting beneath the skin. Surgeries may include breast augmentation, abdominoplasty, rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, surgical face lifts, cosmetic genital surgery, and liposuction.
Non-surgical cosmetic procedure – may pierce the skin but does not cut beneath it. These may include injectable Botox and dermal fillers, thread lifts, laser treatment, fat dissolving injections, sclerotherapy, micro-sclerotherapy, CO2 laser skin resurfacing, fat freezing (cryolipolysis), laser hair removal, dermabrasion, chemical peels, and hair transplants.
When a patient is referred to a psychologist for a pre-cosmetic procedure psychological assessment, the psychologist will conduct a detailed assessment to identify the risks associated to the patient. The psychologist also recommends ways to support the patient in relation to the procedure. The medical practitioner performing the procedure/surgery will then make an informed decision based on the psychologist’s report and other relevant information.
The primary aim of this psychological assessment is to determine if the patient is suitable to undergo the procedure. This then helps to minimise the risk of negative outcomes and provide psychological support where needed. Further information on the aims and outcomes of an assessment are provided below.
1. Assess the patient’s psychological capacity to undergo the procedure.
2. Evaluate the psychological risks specific to that patient and identify any contraindications for the procedure.
3. Evaluate whether the patient may benefit from psychological intervention prior to the procedure.
4. Reduce the incidence of adverse psychological outcomes post-procedure.
5. Provide psychoeducation about the possible psychological impacts of the procedure.
One
Minimal or no concerns about the patient’s capacity to consent and undergo the procedure.
Two
Some concerns about the patients undergoing the procedure, but with psychological interventions the risks may decrease.
Three
Significant concerns and risks of adverse psychological outcomes, with the possibility of a recommendation to not proceed with the procedure.
